5 Easy Ways to Determine if a Filtration System is needed for your Drinking Water
Filtration systems get talked about a great deal. Often overheard at dinner parties, or in the staff room, are folks talking about how much “better,” or “fresher-tasting,” or “clean,” their water is after the installation of a filtration system. But how do YOU know if you need a filtration system for your water? What are the signs? Maybe you think there’s nothing wrong with your water but then you taste your friends or co-workers and it’s game-changing! If you have ever thought about filtered water, even once in your life, or been caught up in that conversation at work over the water cooler, here we offer some tips for thinking about a filtration system and what you should ask when visiting a supplier like Watermaker.
Tastes Bad and Smells Even Worse!
Maybe you have already thought about your water and what to do with it because frankly, it tastes bad OR smells bad. Perhaps even both! A high mineral content, that smells heavily of sulphur, or water heavily treated with chlorine can leave a bad taste in your mouth. It might be considered acceptable by municipal measurement standards but if it’s bothering your taste buds or impacting the flavour of your favourite recipes, it might be time for a change.
Lead in the pipes.
Some municipalities are still, even 30 years after the use of lead pipes was banned, slowly changing over their systems. This is often true in older neighbourhoods. If you have concerns about your water you might want to talk to an expert on our team and have your water evaluated or talk to the town or city you live in to determine if you are at risk. This is particularly important if you are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or have infants and young children at home who are more susceptible to health hazards from lead.
Your Whites Aren’t Whiter
Dingy laundry is often also a giveaway to water that could benefit from filtration. It could be a higher iron presence that’s contributing to your not quite “pearly whites” and if so, filtration is the answer. The same goes for if you find yourself scrubbing and scrubbing away at residue in sinks, around taps or tubs, and shower stalls. If the soap doesn’t lather or there’s “scum” in the tub, it might be time to install a filtration system.
Concerns About Contamination
It’s natural to wonder what’s in your water and it might be time to visit our team and talk about having your water tested if you have concerns. While municipal water systems do their best to remove contaminants, the truth is things still slip through on occasion. Bacteria, water-borne illness, if you have an immune-compromised person living in the home – all are risk factors either as the water travels through the municipal pipe system (even clean water can collect detritus along the way) or because the elderly, infants, and immune-compromised are more at risk to even minor amounts of contaminant.
You’re on Well Water
We have talked about well water in previous blogs but this should serve as a reminder to those of you living in the outlying areas of Caledon, Dufferin, Shelburne, Grand Valley, and many of the smaller hamlets that surround Orangeville; you SHOULD be having your water tested at least once per year. Runoff from farmer fields after a severe and sudden rainstorm can overwhelm local wells causing contamination. Sediment may also be a problem, along with staining (as we mentioned above.)
In short, there are many reasons to get involved in that water cooler conversation. You might learn a thing or two about what to ask the experts here at Watermaker and we’re happy to help. We’ll put you in a position to do your own bragging at work by answering all of your questions and by supplying you with state-of-the-art filtration systems that will address all of your concerns.
